Description

A Margaux Second Wine combining sweetness and refinement

The estate

Located on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Giscours is a historic property in the Margaux appellation, with vines first planted in the 16th century. This superb Margaux 3rd Cru Classé is a true flagship of the Bordeaux region, with its distinctive neoclassical palace architecture, its park of rare species and its buildings, including the beautiful "Ferme Suzanne." Since 1995, Château Giscours has entered a new era in its history following its acquisition by the Albada Jelgersma family.

The vineyard

The Château Giscours vineyard covers 95 hectares of vines in production, out of a total of 300 hectares. A real jewel in the crown of the Margaux appellation, the special feature of the Château Giscours terroir lies in the presence of 3 deep Garonne gravel hilltops, which play a decisive role in the grapes' ripening cycle.

The wine

La Sirène de Giscours is Château Giscours’ Second Wine.

Blackberries, black truffles and black olives on the nose and palate. It’s full and layered with defined tannins that are chewy and nicely coated with fruit. Fresh at the end. Excellent, super wine. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 13% merlot Needs time to come together. Better after 2024.

The second wine of Château Giscours in Margaux, this is rich, structured and so stylish. Tannins are beautifully integrated into the dark succulent black currant fruits in a harmonious whole that will allow the wine to age well over the medium term. This is a fine wine, showing the richness of the vintage while keeping a stylish aspect. Drink from 2025.

This has punch and character and pep. A little drying once you get to the close of play, as I am finding in many of these Margaux second wines, but here it is compensated by an enjoyable depth to the brambled fruits and an overall sense of quiet confidence.
